I began my afternoon by filling the rice container with a fresh delivery of grains. Watching the empty jar overflow with white rice brings a deep sense of security, as if having a full stock of rice gives me the courage to tackle anything. For lunch today, I decided to prepare 'Chungmu Kimbap,' a dish that has been on my mind since I saw it on TV a few days ago.
Childhood Memories as Adult Comfort
Preparing Chungmu Kimbap reminds me of trips to the traditional market with my mother when I was a child. I remember shaking my head at the simple, empty rolls of seaweed and rice, and the intimidatingly bright red spicy squid and radish salad.

Back then, I couldn't understand why people enjoyed such a plain meal. But now as an adult, I find myself constantly craving that balance of clean simplicity and bold spice. Perhaps it’s not just the flavor I miss, but the nostalgic comfort that comes with it.
Wisdom of Love: The Story Behind the Meal
Chungmu Kimbap holds a beautiful story within its humble appearance. In the past, when the city of Tongyeong was known as 'Chungmu,' it was a meal created by wives for their husbands who spent long days fishing at sea.
To prevent the food from spoiling under the hot sun, wives began packing the rice and the spicy side dishes separately. This small act of consideration ensured a safe and hearty meal for their loved ones.
When I roll these kimbap, I don't strive for perfection. The rustic, uneven charm is the true essence of this dish. The care that those wives felt generations ago seems to flow onto my own dining table today.
